The fifth level remains a mystery, but Team Asobi did tease a new bot for Ghost of Yotei. It even teased a new feature upon completing these new Vicious Void levels. Astro Bot has proven to be not only one of Sony’s most successful games but one of the most successful games of all time, at least critically speaking. It does but that’s just recycling mechanics or aspects from those games, it’s not that original, it doesn’t fill in gaps those games don’t offer either regardless of platformer then horror, RPG or open world contexts. I will sound old, but kids today don’t understand how games like these would probably create much better gaming experiences and fun memories than most modern, grindy, live service trash. 10/10 — OutstandingThe pinnacle of a given genre at the time of release, these titles raise the bar in virtually all critical categories.

While Astro Bot is on the shorter side than most other games, with the main campaign running only around 12 hours, this is still an experience that players shouldn’t rush through. The levels throughout Astro Bot are some of the best platforming in all of gaming; players should take as long as they need to take it all in. Every stage is crafted with intent, as nothing feels out of place. Even with the levels’ linear design, gamers will want to explore every square inch to discover fun secrets hiding in just about every corner. Team Asobi brought their signature flair to the mix by making Astro Bot’s levels and platforming stand out. Although NK88 contained the standard gameplay and stages (such as a fire and water level) that are expected of every platformer game, Team Asobi found a way to make these mainstays feel new and fresh.

Crash Site serves as a kind of hub world, in which players can find 35 Bots and 11 Puzzle Pieces. To unlock the levels in “Lost Galaxy” you must find the 10 Secret Level Exits (‘Lost Galaxies’) in the other Nebulas. The Puzzle Pieces are needed to unlock new areas in the Crash Site hub area. After finishing all 10 Secret Levels you unlock the 11th Secret Level. AR Bots make their debut in The Playroom, where they appear in the activity AR Bots, which was named after them. When free, they waddle around the room aimlessly at various speeds.

But on top of all those references, there’s a phenomenal game that forges its own identity and boldly does its own thing. That might be disappointing to some, but it’s an intentional design choice that works in the game’s favor, as Astro Bot is much more focused on the “experience” and wants players to have pure, unfiltered fun. There are optional challenge levels that open up later on, however, for anyone who might be craving that. Astro Bot really is the video game equivalent of venturing through Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory; a delightful concoction of experimentation and joy, just without the child endangerment. Chocolate death pipes and fizzy lifting drinks are instead swapped out for sinkholes leading to treasure and an inflatable friend who helps you reach floating platforms. Each one of these colorful worlds is crafted with meticulous detail and creativity.

It really feels like the developers thought of everything, and thanks to their efforts, Astro Bot is pure joy in video game form. I went into it with high expectations thanks to Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro’s Playroom, and it not only met my expectations, but completely exceeded them. It’s the best 3D platformer since Super Mario Odyssey hit the scene in 2017 and will be remembered as an all-time classic of the genre. Everyone with a PS5 should get their hands on this game ASAP, and hopefully, Team Asobi gets to continue making masterpieces. One level allows you to explore a recognisably domestic world but you can drastically change size, bashing through doorways one minute and wriggling through a gap in the skirting board a minute later.

The team had a talent for unearthing delightful and satisfying interactions from the devices, and they peopled their games with cute little robots who acquired more personality with each installment. We also cranked up the number of baddies too with over 70 new types, including massive bosses at the end of each galaxy. Special mention to the deadly cobra queen Lady Venomara who appears in the trailer, waiting for you in her golden lair. Defeating each boss will uncover a wonderful secret but we don’t want to spoil that, so our lips are sealed😊. And for the brave ones of you craving even more challenge, the game comes packed with die-and-retry levels to test your reflexes.

Bug free and fun does not meet a 10 score, which I was perfectly capable of assessing at age 10. This year alone there has been some first class games released all over the shop. Could it just be that all the critics are right and this is a good game?
